A Successful Season of Salmon Watch

From mid-September to early November, over 1,700 students from schools within the Rogue Valley participated in the Rogue Basin Salmon Watch program. Fall of 2023 was the most successful season of the Rogue Basin program since its return in the spring of 2014.

This success is due in large part to the contributions and support of local communities (Ashland, Central Point, Grants Pass, Jacksonville, Medford, Phoenix, Talent, Jackson County, and Josephine County), Rogue Valley Sewer Services, the Jackson Soil & Water Conservation District, and numerous instructors that contributed their time, effort, expertise, and passion to the program. Volunteer instructors and organizations that provided in-kind contributions (e.g., fish for dissection, permit fee waivers, use of field sites) represent the following partner organizations:

Through our efforts, we provided no-cost field trips to students from nine school districts and twelve private/charter schools. In addition, we taught mixed (1st through 5th) and Advanced Placement (AP) high school classes. Collaboration and partnership make it happen!

For those that are unfamiliar with the Salmon Watch program, a Salmon Watch field day consists of 4 station rotations with a focus on the salmon life cycle, biology, and anatomy, macroinvertebrates, riparian areas, and water quality. Students participate in a variety of activities that instill specific learning objectives and concepts that help to make connections between themselves and the environment. We often hear from students about how much fun they had outdoors and that they hope to be in the environmental field when they grow up. It is such an incredibly rewarding experience!

“Thank you for a great experience. I had a great time learning about riparian areas and why they are needed.”
